Cornerstones.

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

In old testament biblical times, the temple was not only a place of worship , but it was made to exacting standards as a building  worthy of thanking God for his provision.

It was never made out of substandard materials but of the very finest available. It was a building not slapped up in a hurry, but was built by the finest craftsmen of the day to precise and exacting standards.

The cornerstone was the precisely laid stone that would anchor the building. It was the most important first laid stone , and great care and attention was paid to the way it was laid.

Today we link the word cornerstone to things related to Education and in particular to Knowledge. Giving people the basic cornerstones of life means simply giving them the best knowledge available.

If you were around in the 1960′s a famous singing group by the name of Seals and Crofts wrote a song         ” Teach Your Children ” with lyrics that like its title ….Teach your Children Well ….fading memory precludes all the lyrics but the words I do remember reminds me of the need to teach our children everything we know as well as  the things that we have failed to have passed on from generations before us.

Today’s kids need more coaching , more mentoring, more life skills than ever before.

It is not just giving them a book to read and telling them to read it , rather it it showing them the boundaries of what we do and should not do in life and the consequences if we move outside of those parameters.

We are often guilty of passing on the responsibilities of teaching our children life skills to others because of laziness or because we ” don’t have the time ” .

So much of the teaching no longer talks about values . This especially applies  to teaching children skills on handling their finances.

What is being  taught (sold ) is a product or products that banks and finance companies are promoting that will make them a whole lot of money but will keep your kids poor.

Our Kids need the knowledge that will give them not only the building blocks but the Corner stones that will give them the best chances to make the correct decisions for their long term financial health.

As parents we have a responsibility to teach our children how to handle financial responsibility.

In the next blog I will give you some really important cornerstones…stay posted!

I will write again soon
